The Outfit Was Fine Until the Accessories Got Involved
Spring 2027’s best bags and shoes aren’t politely completing the look. They’re interrupting it.

The accessory used to have a relatively straightforward job: finish the clothes. The bag provided polish, the shoe reinforced the silhouette and, somewhere between the two, the runway acquired the commercially desirable objects that might actually make it into wardrobes. Spring 2027 has other ideas.
Across the season so far, some of the most memorable accessories are doing precisely the opposite of finishing anything. Shoes are destabilising otherwise beautiful clothes. Bags are refusing to disappear into the outfit. Familiar objects are being distorted, exaggerated, decorated or used incorrectly. MM6 even stacked six ordinary Havaianas into a single absurd shoe, perhaps the most literal expression of a season in which accessories have stopped behaving themselves.
This isn’t simply the return of the statement accessory. The accessory is becoming a styling intervention.
Here are the ones making the strongest case so far.
TORY BURCH
THE WRONG SHOE IS SOMETIMES THE RIGHT ONE

Tory Burch’s Spring 2027 collection began with “opulent femininity,” but the designer repeatedly disrupted that prettiness with things that felt slightly off. Nowhere was that more successful than at the feet. Asymmetrical kitten-heel pumps were covered in tiny beads, transforming an unmistakably ladylike shoe into something considerably stranger. They didn’t destroy the femininity of the clothes around them; they prevented it from becoming predictable.
THE TAKEAWAY: The disruptive shoe doesn’t need to be ugly. Sometimes a familiar shape shifted a few degrees away from conventional good taste creates considerably more tension than an obviously outrageous one.

SIMONE ROCHA
PRETTY NEEDS SOMETHING TO PUSH AGAINST IT
Simone Rocha has never been particularly interested in allowing femininity to remain uncomplicated. Spring 2027 was filled with the things we instinctively associate with her world, lace, transparency, bows, flowers, lingerie references and romantic volume, but the accessories prevented all that prettiness from becoming too perfectly resolved.
The bags were particularly useful. Rocha continued playing with familiar feminine objects and decorative, tactile accessories against clothes that already carried enormous amounts of romance. Rather than functioning as the sensible counterweight to an elaborate dress, the accessory often pushed the fantasy further until it became slightly strange.
THE TAKEAWAY: We are often told that a statement garment needs a quiet accessory. It doesn’t. Sometimes doubling down is considerably more interesting than restoring balance.

THE ROMANTIC SHOE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE DELICATE
Rocha’s footwear offers the opposite lesson. Against sheer dresses, lingerie constructions and elaborate feminine surfaces, shoes with greater visual weight stop romance from floating away into prettiness. That contrast is important. A delicate dress with a delicate shoe tells us exactly how to understand the woman wearing it. Introduce something heavier, stranger or more grounded at the foot and suddenly the same dress becomes considerably harder to categorise.
THE TAKEAWAY: Don’t automatically finish femininity with femininity. The more romantic the clothes become, the more useful it can be to introduce weight, practicality or awkwardness somewhere else.

PRADA
STOP MATCHING THE BAG
Prada Spring 2027 already had enough going on. Sixty-three looks revolved around skirts, while tiny bras, technical materials, ribbons, crystals and deliberately awkward combinations continually refused conventional harmony. Naturally, the bags weren’t asked to calm anything down.
Unexpected colour, altered proportions and unusual ways of carrying them added yet another point of disagreement to outfits that often appeared deliberately assembled from things that weren’t supposed to belong together.
THE TAKEAWAY: Stop automatically reaching for the bag that makes the most sense. The strange green bag, the overly severe bag or the shape that seems slightly wrong for the clothes may be exactly what makes the outfit interesting.

CARRY IT WRONG
The way a bag is carried can be as important as the bag itself. Prada played with handles, positioning and the relationship between bag and body rather than treating the object as something that simply hangs politely from an arm. It’s a remarkably easy styling intervention to steal.
THE TAKEAWAY: Before buying another bag, change what you’re doing with the ones you own. Grip the oversized tote under the arm. Carry the shoulder bag by its body. Let a long strap hang. Treat the bag as part of the silhouette rather than luggage attached to it.

FENDI
THE BAG IS ALLOWED TO BE FABULOUS AGAIN
After years of whispering, Fendi’s bags appear perfectly happy to make some noise. For Spring 2027, familiar house shapes including the Peekaboo and Baguette arrive with fringe, sequins, studs, embroidery and surface decoration. Fringe gives the Peekaboo movement as it travels beside the body, while embellished Baguettes turn one of fashion’s most recognisable bags into another source of texture within Maria Grazia Chiuri’s layered wardrobe.
There is something refreshing about the lack of anxiety around whether these bags look discreet enough. Their luxury doesn’t depend upon disappearing.
THE TAKEAWAY: The quiet-luxury years trained us to regard restraint as inherently sophisticated. Fendi makes a persuasive argument for remembering that an extravagant bag can be sophisticated too.

MOVEMENT IS AN ACCESSORY
The fringe is particularly interesting because its effect can’t be fully understood in a still-life product photograph. It moves. That changes the relationship between bag and outfit. Instead of introducing only another colour or surface, the accessory brings motion into the silhouette.
THE TAKEAWAY: When choosing an accessory, think beyond what it looks like sitting still. Fringe, long straps, charms, chains and other moving elements can completely alter clothes once the wearer starts walking.

THE ACCESSORY AS TROUBLEMAKER
The strongest accessories of Spring 2027 so far aren’t united by a particular heel height, bag shape or colour. They are united by behaviour. Tory Burch makes good taste peculiar. Simone Rocha refuses to let femininity resolve itself too neatly. Prada refuses to make the bag agree with everything else. Fendi allows decoration and movement to become desirable again.
Even MM6’s six-layer Havaianas belong to the same conversation: take the most ordinary accessory imaginable and interfere with it until it becomes impossible to ignore. After several seasons dominated by the sensible investment bag, the anonymous loafer and the perfectly tasteful accessory, fashion seems ready for something slightly less reasonable.
That’s useful beyond the runway. A strange shoe can completely change clothes you’ve worn twenty times. A decorative bag can interrupt minimalism. A severe accessory can stop romance becoming saccharine. Something inexpensive can become interesting through the way it’s worn rather than the amount it cost.
The accessory doesn’t need to prove that everything in the outfit belongs together. Sometimes its entire job is to cause trouble.
