Hollywood glamour gets a fashion makeover at the 2026 Academy Museum Gala

Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner, Demi Moore and Hollywood's fashion crowd delivered a red carpet of sculptural silhouettes, theatrical details and old-school glamour.

The Academy Museum Gala has become one of Hollywood's most compelling fashion occasions, offering the glamour of awards season without the obligation to dress like an Oscar nominee. At its sixth annual edition in Los Angeles on October 17, the red carpet moved comfortably between classic eveningwear, experimental couture and the kind of fashion statements that deserve considerably more attention than a polite compliment.

Taylor Swift was among the evening's biggest arrivals, wearing a custom icy-blue Dior gown by Jonathan Anderson. The strapless design featured delicate pleating, a sparkling central detail and a sweeping skirt that brought a distinctly romantic sensibility to the carpet. It was an elegant choice that allowed Anderson's Dior to speak in a language Hollywood understands particularly well: beautiful construction, flattering proportions and just enough embellishment to make an entrance.

Kendall Jenner took a decidedly more playful approach in a black-and-white polka-dot gown that combined a fitted, strapless bodice with a dramatic contrasting skirt. The oversized dots, sculptural hip details and coordinating spotted shoes made it one of the evening's most memorable looks. It was an excellent reminder that formalwear needn't take itself quite so seriously to look sophisticated.

Demi Moore offered another interpretation of modern glamour in a black bodice paired with a voluminous lilac skirt. The contrast between the controlled upper silhouette and the extravagance of the gathered fabric created an almost couture-like sense of proportion. Elle Fanning, meanwhile, embraced a softer romantic direction in a flowing pastel gown with an intricately embellished bodice and delicate trailing fabric. Together, the two demonstrated how dramatically different expressions of femininity can coexist on the same red carpet.

The evening's more adventurous fashion moments came from guests willing to move beyond conventional gowns. Jodie Turner-Smith delivered one of the most theatrical looks in a boldly patterned ensemble with sculptural shoulders, exaggerated headwear and coordinating accessories. The result was closer to wearable performance than traditional evening dressing, and all the more interesting for it. Chase Infiniti also made a strong impression in architectural black-and-white stripes, with a dramatically flared peplum and structured skirt that turned graphic contrast into a study of silhouette.

Menswear provided its own welcome departures from the expected tuxedo. A$AP Rocky demonstrated the enduring appeal of beautifully considered formalwear, adding jewelry and an embellished accessory to a classic black evening suit. Alexander Skarsgård took a less conventional route, wearing a crisp white shirt with architectural shoulder detailing, a black floral accent and relaxed tailored trousers. Both understood that the most successful menswear statements often come from changing a few carefully chosen details rather than abandoning tailoring altogether.

Elsewhere, Emma Chamberlain brought a sleek dose of Hollywood sensuality in a glossy red column gown, while Jessica Biel embraced feathered black glamour. Kim Kardashian opted for a more traditional interpretation of red-carpet luxury, wearing a fitted embroidered gown with a softly draped bodice and prominent diamond jewelry.

What made this year's Academy Museum Gala particularly enjoyable was the absence of a single dominant formula. There were romantic gowns, architectural experiments, playful prints and extravagant embellishments, all sharing the same carpet without appearing to compete for one definition of elegance.

At a time when celebrity dressing can feel increasingly controlled by brand relationships and carefully calculated publicity, the most memorable appearances were those that still communicated a recognizable personality. Hollywood certainly knows how to look expensive. The more interesting question is whether it can still surprise us. This year's Academy Museum Gala offered encouraging evidence that it can.
